Late payments (RHI)

Late payment markers, corrected.

Repayment history sits on your file for 24 months and is one of the most commonly misreported parts of an Australian credit report.

What repayment history information is

Repayment history information, or RHI, is a month-by-month record of whether you paid a credit account on time. It appears as a grid of markers on your credit report covering the last 24 months, and only licensed credit providers — banks, credit unions and other credit licensees — are permitted to report it. Telcos and utilities cannot.

Even a handful of late markers can materially affect how a lender assesses you, because they show a pattern rather than a single event.

Grounds for a correction

RHI is reported monthly by systems that regularly get it wrong. Common grounds include payments made on time but processed late, markers continuing after an account was closed or refinanced, a hardship arrangement not being reflected as agreed, direct debits failing through the provider's own error, and markers applied to the wrong account holder on a joint facility.

Where you were in a formal financial hardship arrangement, there are specific rules about how repayment history must be reported for that period. Those rules are frequently applied incorrectly.

How the dispute works

We collect the evidence — statements, correspondence, hardship agreements — and lodge a correction request with the credit provider and the credit reporting body, citing the specific obligation that has not been met. The provider must investigate and respond within the time limits set by the Credit Reporting Code.

Cost and free options

The assessment is free and any fee is payable only where a marker is successfully corrected or removed. You can also lodge a correction request yourself at no cost, and escalate to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority for free.
